Mexico has had a lot of news coverage recently due to several shootings in prime tourist areas such as Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum. The US Consulate issued a travel warning on visiting the region. Major media channels are stating tourists should not visit. Mr. Bug and I decided to escape the cold winter and have been in Playa del Carmen during all of the recent shootings. Many friends and family members have contacted us to make sure we are okay. The question everyone keeps asking….is it safe where you are located?
Our personal experience in Mexico has been amazing and the Mexican people are very genuine, caring, and helpful to travelers and expats. Just as an example, I went for a massage on the beach and took off my Apple Watch for the massage and placed it on a table. After the massage, I was walking back to our condo and realized about a block away that I had forgotten my watch. I turned to go back to get it and there was the massage therapist running down the street to flag me down and return the watch.
I can honestly and truly state that I feel very safe here in Playa del Carmen. I feel safer here than I did when we lived in Atlanta, GA. Is there crime here? Yes. Have I personally experienced anything shady or dangerous here? No. I go out by myself as a female daily and never once have I felt afraid or unsafe. The key to being safe in any location is to be aware. Pay attention to your surroundings. Don’t get wasted drunk and make a scene. Don’t wear flashy clothes or draw extra attention to yourself. There is crime everywhere in the world. Some places have more than others. Don’t let the media scare and prevent you from taking a trip. Do your own research and make your own informed decision about an area. I can personally attest that we feel safe and love life in Mexico and are happy to answer any additional questions or concerns that you may have. Feel free to reach out!
