It has been a hot minute since we did a life update and boy have there been a lot of changes. We have been working diligently towards our goals while still enjoying life to the fullest along the way. In September 2017, we bought a small cabin to use as a rental property in the immediate future and that would serve as a “base camp” later in life when we ramp up our travel. It has been on a short term rental program for almost 4 years now and has been very successful. We have also loved using it ourselves for a nice getaway from the city.

We have been working on our savings rate and were able to increase it to 55%. We just can’t seem to get to 60% without making sacrificed to our current lifestyle, and that’s okay with us. We took some epic vacations along the way including 2 weeks in Italy and Greece, a few cruises, several all-inclusive resorts, Ireland, an epic RV trip through Alaska, and numerous weekend trips around the US.

During the pandemic, we stayed home more than we had in almost 10 years and decided to make some updates to our city house and did a “refresh” of the kitchen and updated light fixtures. It made being home and unable to travel much more tolerable.

Those upgrades proved to be a great investment as we decided to take advantage of the insane housing market and sold our home in May 2021. We downsized from a 2,300 sq. ft. townhouse in the city to our 950 sq. ft. cabin in the woods. It has been a lot of donating and selling random items. Downsizing is a process for sure! Storage totes are my new best friend. It was much more freeing than I expected to get rid of 80% of our belongings. The home sale brought an additional influx of cash which allowed us to reach our magic number at the ages of 38 and 40!

The sale of our city home couldn’t have come at a better time because I got laid off from my job two weeks after closing on the home sale. Thankfully with the proceeds made from the sale, I am able to take some time off and decide what we want to do going forward. Wow, that’s a lot of changes in a somewhat short amount of time. We will go into more details about each life event/change in upcoming posts but wanted to give a general life update in the meantime. We are not sure what the future holds for us right now, but we are excited to find out.
